2010 New York Black Doll and Art Show

Show/Event Recap

All Publications

"Absolutely beautiful!" "Unbelievable!" "It was a like a party!" "Felt like my annual family reunion!" These are a few of the quotes we heard and read via email about the New York Black Doll and Art Show held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the magnificent Riverside Church in New York City. Imagine attending a world-class black doll and art show where everyone is so nice that it feels like a party or family reunion? That is the type of environment we try to foster. And much of that credit goes to our wonderful show-going patrons as well as our exhibitor partners who comport themselves with integrity and professionalism. If you were unable to attend, you really need to come and experience this first hand as 2-D photographs don't capture life in 3-D nor do photographs convey such positive vibes.

We sincerely thank everyone who brought inexpensive toy black dolls to support our Dolls for Haiti initiative:

  • Debbie Garrett
  • Sandra Samaniego
  • Anita Smitherman
  • Wilma Cohen
  • Elizabeth Burnett
  • Cheryl Whitehead, All Dolled Up
  • Debra Douglas, Dollistic Creations
  • Diana Stanley, Skykay Dolls
  • Dolls by MonTQ (Janice Anderson)

We also thank the following exhibitor partners who donated dolls toward the 3 show raffles:

  • All Dolled Up
  • Agape Dolls
  • Art-Zee Sistas Art Dolls and Crafts
  • Black Dolls From the Past
  • Cultured Expressions
  • Crown Glory NY
  • Daisy Carr's Crafts
  • Dolls by MonTQ
  • Edith's Editions
  • Heavenly Honies
  • Her Story Studios
  • Kaity Dolls
  • LaBelle Interiors
  • Shay Ray Creations
  • Willie Mitchell Designs

We send a sincere thank you to all who attended the show and spent their dollars with us. A heart-felt thank you to each and every exhibitor who partnered with us to bring this show to the New York tri-state region. A special thanks goes to our raffle spokeswoman Chuike Anderson and her raffle-ticket-drawing grandson, Jesia Ferguson. And lastly, a gracious thank you to the Riverside Church administration, property and event management team, maintenance personnel and security staff for hosting us, yet again.

Hi. My favorite vendor, Ida Clowney (Ida Clowney Dolls and Crafts), was not there, but I showed up to support the event. I was lucky enough to snag one of Sharon Alexander's (Afro Vintage Couture) lovely compact mirrors!

I will be looking for more of her lovely trinkets the next time around.

Bev,

We are glad you enjoyed the show. Yes, we only had 22 total exhibitor partners for this show (versus prior shows) and more would have been great. However, many former participants and newly registered exhibitor partners had mid-summer commitments and could not attend. Yet, this was by far our best show-goer turnout as you could attest from the buying crowd. So the word is definitely getting out there. The merchandise selection is only going to get better. So be patient, we don't plan on stopping. Period!

It's very nice dolls.

It is an encouragement for us in France to see these beautiful black dolls. Bravo. I hope to come next year to see with my own eyes! Thank you .... to make us dream.

This was my first exhibition at the New York Black Doll and Art Show, the experience was wonderful. The Collectors were full of energy and happy to see everything that the artist exhibited. I have done shows for 20 years and I have discovered that sometimes a smaller show is better, which this show was. The Collectors were able to see everything and mingle with the artist.

I will be returning next year with another collection created especially for New York.

Until Then.

The black doll show has become the premier doll event of the East Coast. The producers do a professional job putting the show together and select the best dollmakers. The dolls vary in types and styles so there is no repetition as you go from booth to booth. All of the dolls displayed portray black dolls in positive images be they reborns, cloth, clay or fantasy... This is truly a show not to be missed!

The New York Black Doll & Art Show was absolutely wonderful. The exhibitors who were showcasing their dolls had beautiful pieces. Each dollmaker took doll crafting to a whole new level. They all had something unique to offer and the quality of the craftsmanship was impeccable. I also loved what the visual artists were showing too. The artworks on display were beautiful, everything seemed to have it's own story. All the items blended together so well, yet each one stood out on it's own. Everyone seemed to be having a good time from beginning to end. This show had so many great elements like style, beauty, art and lots of educational value. Events like this are very important and should continue!

I attended the July 10th show at The Riverside Church and very much enjoyed the wonderful creativity of the various artists. Since then I registered to receive notice of future events. Also, I would like to make contact with a doll maker by the name of Jerri or Geraldine Hubbard. My address for her is Haddonfield, New Jersey. Is she by any chance in your network? She made a doll with Mary Jane shoes, a floppy hat and was dressed in lovely cotton clothing. I had always planned to purchase this doll but did not do so. I appreciate your follow through on this request for information.

This was my second exhibition at the New York Black Doll Show. It was truly wonderful and artists were truly gifted. The show was small, but well attended. The collectors were engaging and asked wonderful questions. It was a pleasure communicating with them. I loved the show. Well done!

Cultured Expressions had a fun & profitable day exhibiting at our first Black Doll Show and we look forward to more. Wish we could join you in ATL but we plan to vend at the November show in NYC again. You're a pleasure to work with, and you attract top-quality vendors and clientele. Thanks and continued success!

This was my third time exhibiting at the New York Black Doll and Art Show at the Riverside Church. It was great and I enjoyed every moment from start to finish. A BIG THANK YOU and GOD'S BLESSING to Chris and Sharon. If you did not attend you missed a treat of very beautiful and creative art work from doll makers and artists. I personally like smaller shows because if gives me a chance to network with the collectors and others. Sometimes larger shows are so overwhelming it does not give the collector or the exhibitor a chance to network and it can also hamper your sales. I am looking forward to the next New York Black Doll Show in July 2011.

Peace and Blessings

Daisy
